I'm not sure if a warning for this overall post is necessary, or not. But it talks in some detail about flaying, for starters. That said...
I thought it would be useful to make a list of the most horrible ways people are/have been tortured, as I'm sure Ramsay would be familiar with all of them and it can be so repetitive if all we ever mention in future fic is that he flayed or whipped someone or cut something off. Yes, that's all very painful and horrific, but I don't see much written about what is going on inside Ramsay's head and I do know if he can be credited with something it is devising very creative tortures. I'd like to see written out his viewpoint on that.
I have a lot of ideas in mind for writing Ramsay in general, and that includes sick little games he'd play. I'd like to write something soon and share it. Until then, I thought I might paste below a link to a site which has record (including photos) of some modern-day horrors befalling people (the event happened back in 2011). The site overall is like 'Torture Newspaper', heh... Very disturbing stuff, I warn you. But what I appreciate about it in particular is that beneath the main feature (report and pictures of what happened to the victim) there is a discussion section and some users on there mention specific details of torture methods they know about and have imagined; most sound quite effective (there is some ridiculous one about 'frying the brain' which is useless for torture purposes, as the brain does not feel pain), and I'm sure Ramsay would know about them. If we write him it's best to know of some weapons in his arsenal, right?
I will post the link to the specific page I'm talking about, but I give the warning again that it is very disturbing. CLICK WITH CARE. And please do make sure no children are around, my goodness, they would be scarred for life by the sight of this... (I also have to give the usual warnings for profanity, extremely racist comments and jokes, etc. I'm not responsible for anything on that website)
The basic story behind this is that in Mexico about 3 years ago some guy pissed off 'a rival narco cartel' and then this group of angry drug dealers/druglords? took revenge by flaying him and a couple of other things too.
Featured are a few pics of a real-life flayed man, in case some of you would like visual reference for what you're writing about and haven't had access to such material until now. All the education you can handle (I would hope, ha ha), right here: Man Skinned by Rival
Most creative suggestions for 'improving' the torture that I found in the comments (Good to read for those of you who want the education without the visuals):
"They cut off his hands and used them to taunt him, too. I bet he was forced to eat one of his own hands. The old Aztec torture.
In these flaying cases, they often find discarded lemons around. I guess the cartels are being exquisite. Cannot think of a more painful way to die than being slowly skinned alive while lemon is rubbed on the exposed dermis."
"If they wanted to be real sob’s they would have done it during the day after drying him up in the steaming sun for a couple of hours.."
"No! No!
Skin and then salt!
Forget pepper, its a home remedy to stop minor bleeding. I used it last week after I picked a small scab off too early.
Just don’t JAM the raw tissue into it! Sprinkle, or pour is on to the wound.
Give it a day or so to dry, the bleeding will have been stopped and the pepper will fall off."
(LOL. So there we find out that pepper is used to 'help' instead of 'hurt'. Good to know. In fact, we might want a thread detailing how Ramsay goes about *healing* Reek's wounds, because to keep him alive after everything he inflicts on him, we know that poor Reek must surely have all of those wounds attended to at times. Regarding the above comment though, I guess the user was suggesting that salt would hurt more than lemon juice. But I hadn't heard lemons mentioned concerning torture before, and I found that an interesting concept. I am certain that lemons would do the job well. I think I've had something similar accidentally rubbed over a healing cut once that had already scabbed over, and it did burn even though the wound wasn't fresh and open. Now, over the flayed surface in a fictional scenario that would be major OUCH!)
We saw something like the below comment suggests in the episode where Arya was held prisoner... the rats inside of a barrel pressed to the victim's chest..
"Richard Kuklinski fed a guy to rats in a cave and sat and watched…he claims it bothered him..somewhat. "
And the next below comment, I don't know about. I looked up 'el portal' and also mentioned skinning but I got a lot of results that looked like they had nothing to do with what I was looking for. One looked like it had something but I didn't trust it to click on, for fear of getting a virus or something. If it checks out though, apparently there are videos of actual flaying out there somewhere. If anyone wants to see a movie with some realistically-portrayed and very sick, disturbing torture shown, the original French version 'Martyrs' is certainly it... there was supposed to be some American remake but I'm not interested in seeing it; I'm sure it would pale in comparison. Now the original had me feeling bothered for a few days afterward. Anyone with a streak of empathy is sure to find it somewhat painful to sit through.
"they do have a web site…i think it’s called “el portal” and supposedly they have videos of them skinning people."
Last comment I'd like to share and then discuss briefly...
"Messy job, but I bet it’s a lot harder to skin a guy than you would think. Hard to make it look nice and shaven eh?"
That person made an interesting point. I noticed in the episode where Ramsay said, "How about your little finger?" It did show a bit of his method, or of the method of flaying in general. It seemed he had to make deep cuts at a few different points where he planned to take a piece of skin. I think that you can't just stick a knife in and expect strips to come off evenly. And eventually with enough of the bloody dermis underneath exposed, it would be difficult to hold onto the victim because they would probably get slippery and have some sticky stuff coming off of them and clinging to clothes and tools... very messy. I'm sure that's why on the Bolton banners it shows the victims fastened to the X-shaped structures; to ensure that a flaying goes 'smoothly', it would help the job to have the victim's limbs strapped down, just like Ramsay had Theon up on that X before he became Reek.
Anyway, I'd like to hear any forthcoming ideas, or suggestions for other creative tortures Ramsay might be fond of. It can't "hurt" to have a nice collection of ideas to draw upon in case one of us wants to write fic but gets stuck at the same old "He decided to take another strip of flesh from the already-mangled creature" or something... feel free to use that, not that I consider it very good, ha ha.
I might try to find (and include in comments here) some more in-detail descriptions of popular Medieval-time tortures as well. Just knowing the names of the devices and what in general they were used to do doesn't make for very interesting story description. If anyone feels like chipping in, I'd appreciate the links to the info.
Yes, this is sick stuff... I was not sure what exactly I would find when I chose to click on the link, but for the sake of research, yes, I was willing to have who-knows-what-kind-of gory image burned into my retinas.. Uh, that sounds brutal in itself. Anyway though, I am all about authenticity in my own writing. As much realism as possible, please, and for those with weak stomachs, well.. they should exit quickly, is all. Not all art is for every art enthusiast... as I'm sure most if not all of my fellow Thramsay enthusiasts would agree.
Thoughts? (on this, the idea of a torture method collective, as well as a healing solutions collective)
